The second happiest 5th birthday for Willie

shared by Ned Balzer
Father of Willie (11/10/92-3/10/93) and Ben (born 4/27/94)

11/11/97: Thanks to everyone who wished Willie a happy birthday yesterday.

It was a rainy day here yesterday. We got off work and fetched Ben from day care just in time to make it up to Willie's tree in Sibley park. There was a slight break in the rain, and it was very foggy and getting dark. At first the only sound we noticed was water dripping from the branches of trees, but then we became aware of the hooting of two owls -- calling to each other through the gathering darkness.

The tree looked somehow comfortable, standing there in its blanket of fog.

Driving away we saw a deer standing next to the road.

We wanted to go get some take out food, but ended up instead at a quiet Thai restaurant. Then we went to a bakery and bought several slices of birthday cake. We came home and distributed 5 candles among the three slices of cake, sang happy birthday and all blew out the candles together.

It was the second happiest 5th birthday for Willie that I can imagine -- the happiest would have been if he had been there to enjoy it with us.
