I read your question on helping your sister-in-law who lost her child to SIDS. I lost my son in 1995 (born Jan. 13 - passed away April 22, 1995). Here are my suggestions: (Hope it helps.) "Concerning SIDS: It's not the parents fault. Parents need to know: (1) They are not alone, (2) Someone is LISTENING; and, (3) Time will heal, but you will never forget (don't expect a parent to forget and PLEASE what ever you do, don't tell them they should be over it! At any time!). For the Mothers: Mostly talk. Whether you as the listener, (you may be) hearing the same thing 50 million times (I know my friends have), you may hear all the stages of life, death, and thereafter. Be attentive and agree. Remember, that's all they have left, for right now, the memories. For the Fathers: This is extremely important. Make it known that he as the Father has the RIGHT to be pissed, mad, angry, JUST AS the MOTHER may feel. A lot of times people forget and not intentionally, but exclude the Father. HE is just as important as the Mother. He also needs the acknowledgement, don't ignore his feelings. He may later (usually takes the male longer) open up and discuss. Just don't make or try not to make him feel obsolete!" Please feel free to e-mail me.

PLACES THAT BELONG TO YOU mornings, evenings, days that hurried past, dreams that should have lasted, moments, hours, slipping by as we, told each other secrets... somehow, i'll never let go of the memories, something always seems to remind me, of how it was, of what it was, when it was, oh there was... laughter, love songs, footsteps that i hear, make me think your near me, poems, pictures, letters never mailed, boats that never sailed... remember that even though we can't be together, we're more for having loved one another, we shared the sky, we learned to fly, someday, when someone else's arms are around us, when time has put some distance between us, the years will kindly show, how memories come and go, they eb and flow, like the tides, there, are quiet, places in my heart, ever since we parted, gentle, tender, traces of a song, places that belong to you.... Amy, this is a beautiful poem. (Hopefully you will see this.) Keep writing!!!

Comments: I lost a granddaughter (her name was Madeline) to SIDS on May 30, 1992, she had been born on Valentine's Day of that year. She lived in Alaska and I never saw her or got to hold her. My son and daughter-in-law were so devistated that they had already had her creamated by the time we got there for the memorial service. They now have two more children plus her older brother. But we all still miss her. A co-worker of my daughter's just lost a grandson to SIDS, I came on line to see what I could find for her. There is still very little said or done for grandparents.

Comments: Losing a child (at anytime, in any type circumstance(s is VERY hard). My son, Quinnzelle BKA "Quinn" or "Q," was my first and only child. He was born January 13, 1995 and passed away April 22, 1995. He had passed away from SIDS. At age 17, I'd buried my Father, at age 22, I'd buried my son... In 1995, he'd passed away (just the way the Holidays hit that year) the weekend after Easter Sunday and the weekend before Mother's Day. It's hard burying any love one, you can't compare your situation with someone else's, it's not fair to them, it's not fair to you... I've learned early in life, you can't take anything or anyone for granted... you live and learn, trial and error, plus, you have to go through your own experience, not any one else's... For being so young, I feel quite old... and that, too, is a state of mind! Truthfully, I don't plan to have any more children for a long while. (I've got the time, only twenty-four years old.) The ex (which is self-explanatory) and I are no longer together... I believe the main reason why we'd stuck it out for so long was for the fact that we had a bond... our son. We were together for one year and a half, and engaged for a year and a half... We imagine that since we could get through our son's birth and death together we could get through anything together, that is not true... Our son was OUR life... and when he'd passed away, it broke our hearts and our spirit, even towards one another. Here is a poem that makes me feel better (I hope it cheers you (the reader) up at least a little bit). I'm so sorry to all who have loved and lost... it gets easier (if you can believe it...) My son would be about 31 months old. My God son is about his age (Quinn would be about 8 months older) and some days is a blessing to see him, other days it's too hard for it's too much of a reminder. ) Feel free to type, whenever you need to or on a regular basis... I'm here. Here is a poem to share with survivors of SIDS... (It does get easier!) Little Angels When God calls little children to dwell with Him above We mortal sometimes question the wisdom of His love. For no heartache compares with the death of one small child Who does so much to make our work seem wonderful and mild. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to His fold So he picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we need them, and so He takes but few To make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view. Believing this is difficult still some how we must try The saddest word mankind knows will always be "Good-bye." So when a little child departs, we who are left behind Must realize God loves children, angels are hard find. Author Unknown From: A friend from the Washington, DC area. Aliza K. Comments: I gave birth to a 2lb baby boy on Jan 8, 1997. He was 28 weeks premature. My husbund and I was assured that the baby would be find by the medical staff and we trust them! Our baby was one of the most active baby in this hospital unit. There was a feeding device put into our baby heart chamber, which were told that is done all the time (we trusted these doctor). On Jan 15th when my husbund and I went to go visit our son they told us that we could not come in cause they were working on our baby his blood pressure was going down and they did not know why. My husbund and I and are family sat in the chaple when the doctor told us that our baby had died. I never got to hold my son until he was dead. I felt like my heart had fell out of my body I was just so hurt and it still hurts. Well they did examine of our son Kristofer and he died of being puncture in the heart with this feeding device . I hurt sometimes but I know I must go on and that one day I will see my son again and get to hold in my arms.

Comments: I wanted to share a title of a book that we have used with our 3 and half year old in dealing with her sisters death. It is called "Someday We'll Play in Heaven". It was a gift to us during the time of the funeral and I shared it with Alexzandra when the visitors all left. She had me read the book about 7 times a day for 4 or 5 days. Then it gradually dropped off. It really seemed to fill a need for her. It is a story of another child losing a sibling. I think it gave her something to connect with. Anyway it worked well for us. It was purchased at a Christian bookstore. The author is Shawn Alyne strannigan and the publisher is Standard Publishing. I was very concerned about Alex and I think she is doing O.K.. It's been 4.5 months since Jessica's death and she still frequently, almost daily talks of her. She is sometimes sad and sometimes just seems to be sorting thoughts. I know it's hard when you are grieving, to also help your children grieve. Peace.

Comments: Today, July 16th Daniel Scott would have been 23 months old. We lost our precious son to SIDS this past March he was 19 months old. I never thought that SIDS would be in my vocabulary after is 1st birthday! Now it seems that is all I know. Daniel was a beautiful, healthy and precious gift from God in which I am thankful for each day that passes. In my heart I recall our 'special' moments together teaching, learning, growing and loving him. When people ask how many children I have I say three, two I long to meet (miscarrage) and Daniel who waits for me in heaven. You see, three is my lucky number, I got a glimpse at eternity and a taste of heaven. My Daniel is just that, a piece of heaven. He reminds me of a rainbow - vivid in color and full of life that brings joy and happiness to any grey. Anytime a rainbow appears we know we are to enjoy and take part in its awesome display of life and beauty and then its gone. My Daniel, vivid and full of life will forever be my rainbow. Happy Birth Date Daniel! Love Mommy! P.S. To all the parents who have lost their precious angels, remember time on earth is only moments in heaven. Your child or children await with open arms. For us it may be minutes, hours, days or years before our rejoiceful reunion, but for our angels it has only been a moment. I know my Daniel is saying 'hello baby' to your child/children and together they are waiting for us. My prayers are with you all. God bless.

Comments: Edgewood, New Mexico My grandaughter died of SIDS May 25, 1996. I miss her with all my heart. I try to imagine the pain my daughter feels but can't. If my pain is this great how could I ever conceive just how bad it is for her. One of the most painful things is, there's nothing or no one to focus the anger on. Nothing to blame, nothing to look at and say, "if it hadn't been for....."! I do have the night before when she was on my lap giving grandma one of her very special smiles. Corrie Kathleen Crook passed over 2 days before her 5th month birthday. I still remember meeting up with my daughter at the hospital and her words, "Mom, My last baby is gone", (she had a tubaligation 6 weeks after Corrie was born and Corrie has an older brother and sister who miss her terribly also), and at the Chapel before the funeral as we stood talking about the flowers and balloons there, she said,"I was suppose to be doing this on her wedding day." When Corrie passed over she was at the sitter's as her mother was at work and I somehow feel guilt about. Thank you for this place to put my feelings.

Comments: I am from the midwest. We lost our Jessica to SIDS a little over 4 months ago. It continues to be a struggle. Some days are better than others and they help. I continue to accept her death tiny bit by tiny bit. Each event that passes, each season that goes by helps me and hurts me. Although I yearn for her to be with us at each turning point, I am forced to accept that she is not. I try to accept her life for what it was, not want I dreamt it to be. I feel that as a mother, it is the most honorable and loving thing I can do. It is also heart renching. I've met a couple of people through this network that have become my friends and that have helped me through some of the most difficult times. I hope that you that read these entries, might also be helped and comforted. Peace to all of you. If you are reading these entries because you are looking for comfort in your loss, you have all my sympathy. I am so sorry. Peace.

He is healty except when this occurs,he has a hard time breathing, turns blue around his mouth, eyes, finger nail beds are purple. What makes it worse, is that there doesn't appear to be a specific cause for it, although there has been plenty of supposition. I do hope a cause is found in the very near future, so that these deaths can be prevented.

Comments: I lost my daughter four years ago. She died of SIDS at two months and two days. Thank you very much for this web site. One thing that I do wish could be stressed more is that there is NO 100% effective way of preventing SIDS. You can make your baby sleep in a certain position, you can shelter them from smoke, you can do many things, but you cannot guarantee SIDS will not strike. The guilt I felt at the time of Lauren's death was stronger than anything I've ever felt and I'm sure many parents feel the same. All safety precautions can be made, but a child can still be lost. I would like to commend you on your support for parents who lost babies in miscarrages, also. A baby is a baby, no matter how young. God bless all of you.

Comments: We lost out precious son on May 23, 1997. He was at daycare. I have been going through so many different emotions since then. We had a beautiful memorial service for him, even though he was only 4 months old, everyone he meet feel in love. We had recently joined a new church and everyone has been wonderful. I can truly say, Hunter touched so many lives in the short time he was here! A friend of mine wrote this poem for me and read it durning the service. I read it when I feel down and can't understand why this had to happen, and it helps me feel better, so I thought I would share it with you. My baby Jesus came down to me and he said that I had to go. I knew this would break your hearts, So I wanted you to know- That I love you both so very much and I'm in a peaceful wonderful place. There is nothing more precious or beautiful then my baby Jesus' face. He smiles at me the way you did, And he hugs me really tight. He holds my hand and pats my back, And tucks me in at night. He tells me that he is sorry for the pain that you will feel, but he also tells me to let you know that my life up here is real. I see the tears run down your cheek, but please Mom and Dad don't cry. It may not make sense to you right now. But one day you'll know why. I'm safe and warm and happy, and I miss you both so much, But nothing could be more beautiful, than my baby Jesus' touch. Comments: I havent been here in awhile, and decided that this was the night to visit again. I lost my little Alena Jayne on June 5, 1996 to SIDS. She was happy, healthy, and full of life, even moments before she passed away. I have a 3 year old girl named Kaitlyn who sometimes says to me "Mommy, Alena died", and I look at her and say "yes, honey, she did." and then she says to me "Alena is an angel now" and walks away. Somehow, this is very comforting to me, to know that at least Kaitlny somewhat understands why Alena isnt here, even though I still am not sure that I do. I want to have another baby soon, but i was on depo-provera soon after her death, and have only been off of it a few months, so i am not yet able. I want another baby, but I am scared. I have a Memorial page for those who wish to have pictures, poems, or just a message posted about their baby. Just having Alena's memory open for all to see is enough to make it a little bit easier during these times when it still hurts so very much to be without her. This page is wonderful. Thank you SIDS-Network, you really have been a liferaft for me. Amiee

I was able to resuscitate him, but he remained on a ventilator for 5 days. It has been 9 weeks since his death and still no autopsy report has been finished. I have been told that it wasn't SIDS from day 1 because he was too young, but I believe in my heart that it had to be. Can anyone help me here? Still bitter and angry.

Comments: Cleveland, Ohio Kurt and I lost our first son, Dacota Reed on August 21, 1996. I was three weeks to full term and found out the cord got wrapped around his shoulder and closed off his circulation. I'm now 31 weeks with our second child and a nervous wreck thinking this could all happen again and no one can stop it from happening since it was such a freak accident. The doctors are doing everything they can to monitor me and the cord but no one knows. We haven't found out yet if this is a girl or a boy but that doesn't really matter anymore. When we lost Dacota all our dreams and fantasies about how he would grow up were lost forever. I really don't think we have any dreams or expectations this time, I sometimes feel that Kurt and I are just waiting for them to tell us something happened again. The pain from Dacota is still there and I'm not sure will go away or lessen. I would love to hear from people who have gone through the same situation and everything turned out all right. Of course the next thing to worry about will be SIDS, if everything is o.k., does the worrying ever stop? My heart goes out to all the people that have lost a child for what ever the reason is, no one will ever know what it feels like until they are in the same situation. We signed the guestbook back in October, 1996 and the feelings are still the same. Mommy and Daddy miss you Dacota and love you very much.
