Comments: Trappe, MD. --- My daughter, and first child, Halley passed away three years ago( february ). I consider myself a strong person, but her death brought me to my knees in pain. As anyone who has dealt with a loss due to SIDS knows, nobody can prepare a person for such a sudden and unexplainable loss in your life. WHY?WHY?WHY? Seems to be the first thing that I can remember feeling. I say feeling, because it seems to me that that question took hold of my thoughts both night and day for a long time. To this day it is and will remain a question that lingers in my mind. Possibly a search for an answer that does not exist. My life, of course, has continued on as it will for many others. I know that other parents that have and it is sad-to-say will have to deal with the emptiness. I have no words of wisdom nor do i wish to offer any thoughtful insights into the reasons for the loss of anybodys loved one. I would like to say to those parents, you are not alone, take solace in the memory of your loved one. HALLEY, DADDY MISSES YOU....

I would like to wish all these parents the best of luck and even though I am just 14 I have a great ear and do my best to understand. I was there for my nieghbors and now I am doing a project to raise money for the SIDS places in memory of my little angel Kevin. I was his summer sitter I watched him most of the day and got extremely attached to him. I still get the lowest of feelings some days but then I think of all the other people. I want to help end SIDS and anyone who wants to talk. I do have a great ear.

My son is 15 months old now and I have heard that SIDS can strike up to 2 YEARS even though it is rare. I stopped worrying when he turned 1 year old BUT now my sister is pregnant and due in February so the worrying starts all over again for my niece or nephew. This site brings tears to my eyes each and every time I visit and I am here at least once every 2 weeks. My heart breaks for the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, etc. God bless you all and keep you in His care.

We will be looking at this one... Me and my husband lost our firstborn child - little Hanna - in January 1991. After more than five years, we are still in some kind of a shock. How could this happen? Did we do something wrong? Why did our second child survive, he who was born with some diseases, he is now a perfectly healthy child. Of course these pages are mostly visited by americans; just wanted to tell all of you people from my part of the world that you are not alone. If you like, send me an e-mail. Eva Gustafsson, Sweden

Comments: I am a plaintiff's personal injury (including much medical malpractice) lawyer in Panama City, Florida, who has been asked by a family to investigate whether a monitor should have been prescribed and provided, as they asked for several times, for their 6-month old baby who had exhibited significant (even monumental!) signs of being at high risk for SIDS. Their requests were denied time and time again. One evening after napping in a chair with his baby on his shoulder, the father awoke to find the child blue. Resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful. I would also appreciate being referred to experts in the field. My e-mail address is pittman@beaches.net, and the tel. is 904.784.9000. Please steer me to the proper standards and to experts in this area. I will be grateful for your guidance. Wes Pittman

Comments: We live in Dana, IN. Our son, Theo, died 1/31/95, six days after he was born. The cause of death was "undetermined," the autopsy showed he was a perfectly healthy baby boy. The medical examiner and the children's hospital were reluctant to classify his death as SIDS because of his age. We now have a six month old daughter who was on an apnea monitor for the first three months. Hoping to talk to parents who have had subsequent children and how they dealt with panic feelings.

Once or twice with a babysitter they have put her to sleep on her tummy and this alarmed me, this person was a seasoned mom also. Do you tell everyone & be "paranoid"? My first daughter slept on her tummy all the time with no problems, how do you know?

Comments: I am an RN who has completed Grief Counseling Certification through Bereavement Services/RTS. I became interested in obtaining this certification after experiencing a fetal demise at 23 weeks gestation. I have not had the opportunity to use the certification yet in a professional realm, as I took the course after my daughter was born, and haven't returned to work yet (she's almost 3). I have, however, been able to put use what I've learned in my volunteer work for Sidelines, a national support network for pregnant women on bedrest. Many times these women loose their pregnancies or have had previous losses.

Comments: I live in San Marcos, CA, which is about 30 miles north of San Diego. My daughter lost a boy of 3 months on July 25, 1996, presumably to SIDS. The baby was discovered barely breathing. My wife started breathing for him, and within a minute his heart stopped. About that time the fire department arrived, took the baby, and sped off to the hospital. They put him on a respirator and controlled his heartbeat with medication (the fire department had started his heart again). Children's hospital sent their ambulance to the hospital the baby was in and transported him to San Diego. He underwent a battery of tests, the ultimate conclusion of which was that he was severely brain damaged - only enough brain stem function was left to beat his heart. After much agonizing, we decided that the baby's life support should be terminated. We were contacted by the organ donor foundation (or whatever their official name is) and were told that since the baby wasn't entirely brain dead they could only take non-vascular parts, i.e. heart valves and corneas. In our view, part of the real tragedy of Brandon's death is that there was no way for somebody else to benefit. Brandon's life would have been so much more meaningful if his liver, kidneys, or whatever could have been used to save another young life.

I am a parent who has lost a child to SIDS in March 1988. His name was Travis Adam, age 3 months. We have a daughter who was 5 years old at the time (so presently is 14 years old). We now have a son through international adoption, who is now 7 years old. I am glad someone finally put up a web site for SIDS. Is there anyone out there who would like to share their feelings regarding siblings and SIDS? Our daughter is missing her brother terribly and wonder if it would help her to correspond with someone who is feeling the same. Thanks!

We are currently still waiting on the results of the autopsey (we were told we wouldn't get the final results until mid-August. We still don't know how she died or if it was SIDS, but the loss of a child, especially an infant is something that is commonly devastating, no matter how the cause.

This happened at the baby sitter's house while we were at work. And just few days before that I had told her baby sitter not to put her down on her tummy - I never did, but she told me that she sleeps better that way. I somehow cannot get rid of the guilt thinking if I had been there with my daughter she probably would be alive...........
