Her brrother Eric was born on December 17, 1996 and is currently on a monitor for 5 months as perscribed by the doctor. We also have older children, ages 6 and 4. At this tome I am not planning on returning to work since Sara died at day care and Eric will be on the monitor.

I think that in itself makes it so much harder to accept. I find myself believing the theories that applied more to Spencer's condition, he was a sound sleeper and was found on his tummy. But, what about the babies who are being held in their parents arms, and are restless sleepers? I would love to have an answer for this terrible thing that has ripped my heart in two. As would we all. I also would love to hear from any other mother's, especially of twins, how has experienced this misfortune. 2619 F Avenue, Gothenburg, NE, 69138

As the mother of two beautiful children (1 1/2 and 4 yrs. old) I feel helpless, fearful about the fragility of life and even somewhat guilty vis-a-vis my friend. Probable cause most likely to have been cytomegalo virus and rapidly cut off his air supply 2 days prior to due date. I had an older daughter Jessie who was the greatest help at this time. I tried to have more children but not for about 2 years after his death. I then went on the have 4 early miscarriages( doctor unable to explain) probably stress related. But I kept on trying and now I have 2 other children, Nicholas who is nearly 5 and Sarah who is 3.

Comments: I live in Alhambra, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles. My second son and second child, Christopher Aaron Oda was born on January 26, 1996, and died of SIDS one day before 3 months on April 25, 1996. Sunday was his first birthday. He was at home napping when his dad found him at 10:30am. I was at work (just returned to work 2 weeks). The paramedics said Chris could be revived since he had a strong heartbeat. My husband Steve signed the papers to let Chris go peacefully because he had minimal brain activity. We had decided long ago that life support was not an option for any of us. We are both in the health profession, and have seen too many of these sad cases. Christopher was a vibrant, active, beautiful baby. He is survived by his older brother, Matthew, who was 5 at the time and was at school. When Chris was born, I had a postpartum tubal ligation done. In July, I had a reversal and we are trying to get pregnant again. I have many sad, angry, mixed emotions about this. I would love to have another baby in my empty, aching arms again. On the other hand, I feel a tremendous amount of guilt because I feel I'm betraying my precious Christopher. Every day, I think of the wonderful 3 months we had with him and thank God for that. I also thank God for my sweet Mattie, who is at times my ONLY reason for living. The SIDS support groups have been wonderful. Steve doesn't go to the meetings with me yet. I would love to hear from anyone who has had a subsequent baby after a tubal reversal. My e-mail address is: AhnOda@msn.com. My family had a quiet birthday party for Chris on Sunday. Matthew blew out the candle for Chris. I imagine he would be running around by now since he was a very active boy. Chrissie, I wish you a very happy first birthday! You sit on my shoulder and live in my heart forever. I love you and miss you so much. I patiently wait for the day when I'll see you and hold you in my arms again. Love Always, Mommy.

This is something that I deal with everyday of my life.I have a daughter that was one year old when this happened and I have since had another son. My second son has a condition called APNEA,which is very emotionally stressful. I have a constant fear that this will happen again. I think I might be able to deal with this a little better if there was a reason known as to why this happens. I hope and pray that someday we will know why.

I have always been aware of SIDS, and want to do everything I can when I have children to prevent it, but it scares me because what can you do? A little girl in my neighborhood died on Christmas Eve in 1992. Her family was devastated because her death was completely unexplained. We were all affected by it. They suspected SIDS. I don't know why some people are chosen to endure such hardship and trial, especially around the holidays, but I do know one thing and that is God will never give us something to endure that we are not strong enough to overcome, although we may always feel the loss. I truly feel sorry for those of you whose stories I've read who have suffered a loss so painful. My heart and my sincere prayers go out to you. God bless you, and I hope one day we will be able to prevent this.

Comments: we lost our first child to an infection at 5 1/2 months into our pregnancy. It is the hardest thing we have ever been thru. It is hard to go into the empty nursery and think of all of the '"what-ifs" We have found comfort and strength from the book WHEN GOD DOES'NT MAKE SENSE by DR, JAMES DOBSON. Instead of being angry at God it helped us realize that is where our help was waiting. It happened on Easter weekend of 1996, The greif does not go away but it does get easier. God Bless those who are going thru this loss.

Comments: I feel like I'm just butting in without a lot of knowledge on this subject, but I am allergic to perfume and recall many years ago I washed sheets in Downey (or some such product) and woke up in the middle of the night unable to breathe. Scared the heck out of me and it took 24 hours for the pain in my chest to subside. I've always wondered if anyone had looked into the connection of SIDS and perfumed products for babies and/or how clothing was washed or dried? Sounds so simplistic, I know, but it's bothered me for years wondering if anyone had ever researched it?

Comments: I live on Long Island and ten years ago my grandson, Greggy, died of SIDS. Since that time because I'm a writer, I've written some articles and a book to help people understand the difficulties for the parents of Sids babies and to try to show how our family made sense of Greggy's death. There's an Angel in the book, she helped explain the reasons, but of course, at the time, my daughter's heart couldn't hear. But since that time, she's had two other little girls and adopted and little Romanian boy. The big publishers were afraid of publishing anything about death....especially about a baby...but now, I've decided to publish it myself and wonder if there's any special points you'd want me to make. Anything particularly hurtful or healing that you've found. The book is a hopeful one, one of healing, and I've included several support group sessions to show the courage of the parents and to help destroy the stereotypes. My daughter was President of the Long Island Chapter of Sids for a period of time and parent contact. Now she's an alcohol counselor....I guess what I'm trying to say is that Life does go on...Of course, Greggy died that year, on the first snow, and since then I've never seen snow without it being very special to me.

Comments: It was 9 years ago, but still seems like yesterday. I discovered my 7 month old nephew dead in his crib. I tried desparately to revive him but it was no use. He was the youngest of 7 kids. I think maybe a previous cold and the fact that the whole house had just been recarpeted with new carpet may have been factors. It still devastates me and made the early months of my own daughters life really stressful. I felt so very helpless.

Comments: Living in Poole, Dorset, England I have been involved in a charity appeal to raise money to buy apnoea alarms for our SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit). these are loaned out to families 'at risk', ie., they may have lost a previous child through SIDS. A work colleague (another paramedic) actively promotes infant CPR in our area. Guess what? I cried when reading the letters and articles in the 'First Person' section. I'm a Paramedic of 18 years, it touched me! Good work, maybe I can get the interest (and finance) to set up a similar SIDS site over here. Any advice and info greatly received. Comments: There should be more information stressed in this site about the importance of breastfeeding as a way of trying to prevent SIDS. Give as much info about co-sleeping and breastfeeding as you do sleeping positions and pillow wedges and your site would be even more useful and educational. Many pregnant families check out this site and I think this should be highlighted in an assessible way. It is sad that The only thing i found casually surfing this site about breastfeeding was to say "many more babies NOT breastfed" die of sids. This IS Very Important fact!

Comments: I am located near Spokane, WA and am new here. I would like to get in touch with some SIDS parents in this area or anywhere for support and companionship. SIDS parents can help other SIDS parents more than anyone else. I lost my daughter Hailey in July of 1995 to SIDS, she was 5mos 14days old. I now have a four month old son. Also, I am currently in touch with someone doing extensive research on immunizations and believe there may be a connection. It is a fact that many babies who die from a DPT shot are diagnosed as SIDS. Any way you look at it, DPT plays a role but is not the only cause there is. I would like to hear from anyone interested in discussing the topic.

Comments: My supervisor and friend had a miscarriage right around Thanksgiving. I never thought it would affect me the way it did. She is a different person now, harder to talk to. I know she is hurting, but I don't feel there is anything I can do. She is jealous of everyone who is able to get pregnant, as she has been trying for a couple years. She and her husband are going to keep trying. I just pray the next time she is blessed with a happy and healthy child. My prayers didn't work the first time around. (Can't quit praying though!) She still doesn't understand why it happened. All we could say is that we were sorry and maybe there was something wrong with the baby? I don't know if this makes her feel any better. People she hasn't talked to in a while still ask her if she is having morning sickness, etc. It must hurt to be asked those questions after losing the baby. Our work almost didn't give her any bereavement pay because they said there was no funeral. You can't tell me she's not grieving! Luckily our District Manager had also had a miscarriage and pushed the paperwork through. This world is just plain crazy. It's hard to understand these sad things, isn't it? Any words of encouragement are welcome. Any words for her I will pass on to her as she has no computer.

Comments: When our daughter ws 20 days old she suffered an ALTE, I did CPR on her as did the rescue squad. She was termed a "Near Miss Sids" and diagnosed with GE Reflux and apnea. She was on an apnea monitor and pulse oximeter for 8 months. She is now almost 7 years old. I recently gave birth in April to a beautiful little boy. He was placed on the monitor at birth, and has also been diagnosed with GE Reflux. He just turned 9 months a few days ago and tomorow the monitor company is coming to take the apnea monitor. I am scared! I've heard that there may be a correlation between GE Reflux and SIDS, is this true? My heart goes out to the parents who have suffered a loss.

Comments: Dear Sir/Mdm, PLEASE LET ME HAVE WHATEVER INFORMATION YOU CAN ON SIDS. I WOULD WANT TO MAKE MYSELF AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I FEEL IN NORTH INDIA WHERE I WAS BORN I DID NOT HEAR OF MANY SUCH CASES. IN FACT, IF YOU COMPARE THE TOTAL NO. OF INCIDENCES AGAINST THE TOTAL NO. OF BIRTHS, THE OCCURANCE HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY NEGLIGIBLE. ACCORDING TO ME TWO FACTORS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS: ONE, MOST INFANTS SPEND ON AVERAGE MUCH HIGHER DURATION OF TIME EITHER IN MOTHER / FATHER'S LAP OR BESIDE THEM IN THE BED OR IN RELATIVES LAP AND TWO, THE COTS USED IN NORTH INDIA ARE OF UNIQUE TYPE ( I HAVE'NT SEEN SIMILAR COTS IN US, UK OR SINGAPORE WHERE I HAVE LIVED ). ALL THESE COTS HAVE A SWING BUILT IN IT WHICH WILL KEEP ROCKING THE INFANT VERY MILDLY RESULTING IN CLEARANCE OF AIR PASSAGES ETC. MIND YOU, THESE COTS COST YOU A VERY SMALL FRACTION OF WHAT A MOTHERCARE STANDARD COT WILL COST. I AM WILLING TO CONDUCT SOME RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT WITH WHOSOEVER CONCERNED. I COULD BE CONTACTED ON MY E MAIL OR THROUGH THE FOLLOWING NUMBERS AT SINGAPORE: TEL: 65 2217524 WORK 65 4416043 HOME 65 2247812 FAX RAVI THAKRAN

Comments: I live in Houston, Texas. My grandson, Jonathan, died in his sleep while napping last Thursday, January 2, 1997. He would have been a year old January 5, 1996. He was a premature baby, weighed 3 lbs. 1 oz and his mother almost died having him as she was seizuring and didnot even know she was pregnant when they took him by emergency C-Section. He had one episode when he was five months old but was revived. We monitored him every nigh but he never displayed any apnea but had displayed some low heart rates recently which they said were not pertinent. We have not received the final autopsy but they have found nothing yet as the cause....He was fine when we put him to bed for his nap. He was our life....This is insane....

My nephew and his wife lost their first and only son " Tanner" to SIDS in September last year and I know their hearts ache for the wanting of their son back. My sister-in-law, as the Grandmother told me recently that she felt as though no one understood her own personal grief at the loss of her Grandson, she said she often would like to say " Don't you know how sad I am?". I hope that all members of these families will try to remember that it is not only the parents but the Grandparents who also grieve, and that we try to be more patient and understanding for them as well. This is a great site and I appreciate it existance.

Comments: My husband and I live in Houston, Texas. We lost our precious baby boy on October 9, 1995, Quinton Newell Miller was 31 days old.I am so touched by all the comments I read today. Why this horrible tragedy happens I do not know. What I do know is that our babies who have fallen victim to SIDS are just as special as healthy, living children and I have vowed to never let my Angel Quinton's short time on this earth be forgotten. My husband and I attend support groups but we are very interested in speaking with anyone else who would like to share the beautifl memories, even the tragic ones.I, like many other mothers found my son after he had passed. We are expecting a child in August and many of the terrible nightmares that have begun to fade are back again. We are excited and terrified at the same time. We would welcome mail to our home also. Love and strength to us all.777 Bateswood #16 Houston,Tx.77079.

Comments: Rochester, New York: My son Dante died of SIDS seven years ago. I now have two lovely daughters. As soon as Dante died I found comfort in attending support group meetings and, to this day, attend them monthly to help other parents. Although it has been seven years I have anger, unanswered questions and the "what ifs and should ofs." But, it is easier to make to accept, but not to forget. I would be glad to receive mail from others who need support.

Comments: i found out about you all through the f-body list due to member Joe Creecy's son dying of sids. i have always been scared of sids. i understand that the family bed and breastfeeding correlate with lower incidence of sids. i do not understand why there is not an inexpensive device which can detect sids available to the public. there is a design that could work on an IBM PC which i have wondered about - simply place the PC microphone near the baby's crib and have it listen for breathing sounds and beep the bell if it stops hearing them. maybe the result would be lots of false beeping all night long. i don't know. i suppose i should begin trying to write software for this! maybe ideal would be a microphone which was taped or sewn into the baby's clothes, with a wireless infrared LED hookup to the PC. also, i just sent you a donation of $100 in memory of Joe's son. peace to you, /eli
